"It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen" - John Wooden (Amercian basketball coach extraordinaire)
Wanting to do something a little different for myself and my businesses, I decided to contact a friend of mine who is an image consultant here in Calgary. Camille Kim (First Impressions Image Ltd) and I met at a women in real estate networking event in 2015 at the Ranchman's Club, where Camille did a talk and presentation on her business and what she does. I was intrigued, as I had it in my mind that image consultants were for women with expensive tastes and very deep pockets. However, Camille came across very professional in her approach, talking about a very wide range of places where women can pick up pieces to fill out or compliment their wardrobes. We became friends on social media and I put a consultation with her in my goals for 2016.
Camille's initial consultation was in two parts, spread over the course of a few weeks. The first session involved going to her home, where she has set up a consultation room and office in the front of her home. In fact, it is discreet from the rest of the home that you don't really feel like you are in her home per se. After a brief introduction of herself to me, we began, but not before we realized that we are both fluent in Mandarin Chinese, having both lived and worked in Chinese speaking countries in our pasts - what fun, how could this not work out? Moving on, she talked with me about my business lifestyle, personal lifestyle, what I like (non clothing related things) and what I enjoy doing, etc. She then draped me with different colored cloths as a way of seeing if I was one of the four seasons, Autumn, Winter, Spring or Summer. From that, she was able to determine tones and colors that will compliment and work with my hair, eyes and skin tone. I turned out to be an Autumn, and as much as I had never had my 'colors done' before, I wasn't surprised. Many of the colors, tones and shades were things that I have gravitated towards naturally, whether in my fashion style, home, or collectibles / art works. We also talked about body and face shape, length of hair and many other aspects of what makes up looking good. It isn't just a single element like a pair of shoes or a dress, it is a combination of many different factors. Camille sent we away with some reading materials and much to think about.
The second part of the initial consultation involved having Camille come to my home where I was able to show her all of my wardrobe pieces - clothing, pants, belts, shoes, sun glasses, scarves - she commented on my wardrobe in relation to my coloring, hair, eyes, body style and helped me put together pieces that I hadn't thought would go together before. It was the best part of the consultation, as it was truly all about me and my stuff, not to mention it was fun to try on items to make a new wardrobe outfit. In fact, until now, I haven't purchased anything new, so it was just working with what I have. However, through the wardrobe consultation, Camille diligently made notes and wrote up a 'fashion wish list', so that when I am ready for a shopping trip, I will know what to focus on. Kind of like a wardrobe edit, Camille also carefully suggested items that didn't really work for me, or were too worn, and pulled out pieces that might be best passed on so to free up space for some new items that will work better. Throughout the session, she suggested different stores and brands that I might want to consider, which will be very useful when I head out on my next clothes shopping trip.
It was an amazing experience, and was a lot less 'threatening' than I had originally had in my head. I really enjoyed working with Camille and would highly recommend an image consulting process to anyone needing a change.
